Searching Corporate America
Nowadays, almost all corporations have web sites and many include career sections that list current openings. Local employers of many different stripes post jobs, including Target, The Science Museum of Minnesota, ADC Telecommunications, and the Minnesota Historical Society.
Employment web sites allow job seekers a chance to learn more about the company through the information on the site.
Tracking the Classifieds
The biggest advantage in using online resources for finding employment comes with the ability to easily find jobs that meet your requirements through keywords and a click of the mouse. No more sifting through pages and pages and pages of newspaper classifieds to find the career of your dreams. There are two types of web sites that allow you to search through databases of jobs: traditional newspaper sites and online career sites.
Both, the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune offer an online counterpart to their paper classifieds.
Career Sites are prevalent on the Web. There are general career sites that help seekers find any type of employment; examples of these are: Monster.com, Employment Planet, Minnesota Jobs and hotjobs.com. The other type of career sites are those specializing in special segments of employment such as iXmatch.com and Techies.comwhich both specialize in matching information technologists with employers.
Regardless of type, the main feature of these sites are the database of present job openings. Some sites allow the hunter to enter any keywords, while others offer selection boxes to ensure the hunter enters the required criteria. Generally, the search returns a list of matching jobs with links to more complete descriptions. Usually, these descriptions are more detailed than those found in classified ads. Employers usually provide profiles of themselves and links to the employer's web site.
Most career sites offer more than databases of job openings. Other handy features include: career centers with resume builders and other job searching tools and information, areas to post resumes and an e-mail notification systems, which let's you know when a job meeting your requirement is offered.
